Alaska's public water systems span two very different worlds. Large municipal plants in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau draw on glacial rivers and lakes and run conventional treatment trains comparable to systems anywhere else in the country. At the other extreme, hundreds of small rural and Native village systems serve communities of a few dozen to a few hundred people, and roughly 32 of these communities remain largely "unserved" by piped water altogether — over 3,300 rural homes rely on haul-truck delivery or community watering points rather than a pressurized distribution network.
