Arkansas classifies Distribution licenses partly by pressure-plane complexity (single vs. multiple pressure planes) and population served (ADH Rules, Section V/Table 1). Grade II-IV operators manage systems where this complexity is the norm, not the exception.
Hydraulics & Multiple Pressure Planes
A multiple-pressure-plane system has more than one pressure gradient downstream of the source of supply, created by booster pump stations or pressure-reducing valves. Grade III/IV operators are expected to:
  • Understand how booster stations and PRVs create separate hydraulic zones, and how a failure in one zone can propagate to or be isolated from adjacent zones.
  • Calculate available pressure/head loss across a zone using elevation change and friction loss, not just static pressure at a single point.
  • Manage storage
