Advanced Practice for California Grade III-V Wastewater Treatment Operators
Grade I and II wastewater treatment certification (23 CCR §§3670.1, 3671, 3683) is achievable through experience alone — 6 educational points and 1 year for Grade I, 1.5 years as a Grade I operator for Grade II. Grade III through V require substantially more, through several alternate qualifying paths.
The experience ladder (fastest qualifying path)
  • Grade III: 3 years as a certified Grade II operator (alternates: Associate degree/60 semester units incl. 15 science units + 2 years, or HS diploma + 16 educational points + 4 years).
  • Grade IV: 4 years as a certified Grade III operator (alternates: Bachelor's degree, wastewater-related, incl. 30 science units + 2 years; Associate degree + 4 years; or HS + 32 educational points + 6 years).
