Knowing that pressure comes from elevation is the starting point. As a Class 2 operator, your job is to actively manage that pressure — to understand exactly how a zone boundary is held in place, how the valve doing that job actually works, what it looks like when that valve fails, and how to read the three different "kinds" of pressure you will encounter during routine field work like hydrant flow testing. This is where hydraulics stops being background knowledge and becomes a daily operational tool.
Pressure Zone Boundaries: How They're Set and Held
Zone boundaries are established primarily by ground elevation / topography — the main driver of where a boundary goes in any system with significant elevation change. Once a boundary is chosen, it has to be physically maintained, which is typically done one of a few ways:
- Closed boundary valves — a valve is simply kept close
