Idaho Water Treatment Operator Certification: Program Overview
Licensing Authority
Idaho's water treatment operator certification program is overseen by the Board of Drinking Water and Wastewater Professionals, which has an agreement with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) to review applications, administer exams, collect fees, and issue licenses. The underlying regulatory authority for public water systems rests with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
License Classes
Idaho issues water treatment operator licenses at five levels:
- Class I Restricted — a limited-scope entry credential for simpler or smaller treatment facilities
- Class I — entry-level general certification
- Class II — requires 4,800 hours of on-site operating experience at a Class I or higher system, or completion of an approved appr
