Indiana Wastewater Operator Certification: The Dual Municipal/Industrial Track System
Two Parallel Certification Tracks
Under 327 IAC 5-23, Indiana is unusual among states in maintaining two separate wastewater operator certification tracks, based on the type of plant being operated:
Municipal (nonindustrial) plants — classified by design population equivalent:
- Class I-SP: Waste stabilization ponds, regardless of flow.
- Class I: Plants under 2,000 design population equivalent.
- Class II, III, IV: Progressively larger/more complex municipal plants.
Industrial plants — classified by treatment type, design population equivalent, and average daily flow:
- Class A-SO: Primary solids removal facilities.
- Class A: Secondary treatment facilities under 2,000 design population equivalent.
- Class B, C, D: Progressively larger/more complex industria
