A State of Rural Water Districts
Kansas has more than 1,000 public water supply systems overseen by KDHE's Public Water Supply Section. A large share of these are organized as Rural Water Districts (RWDs) — utilities that serve large, low-density geographic areas, often from wells or purchased treated water, rather than a dense municipal grid. This creates distribution challenges distinct from urban systems:
- Long transmission mains connecting widely spaced customers.
- Elevated storage and booster pumping stations needed to maintain pressure over large service areas.
- Water-age and chlorine residual maintenance challenges, since water can spend much longer in the pipe network before reaching low-density rural customers than it would in a compact city grid.
