Minnesota Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification: Class S-D Through S-A
Certification Structure
Minnesota certifies wastewater collection system operators separately from treatment plant operators, under the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA) "Type S" classification system. Unlike the points-based classification used for treatment plants, collection system classes are graded by the population served:
- Class S-D — systems serving fewer than 1,500 people
- Class S-C — systems serving 1,500–14,999 people
- Class S-B — systems serving 15,000–49,999 people
- Class S-A — systems serving 50,000 or more people
An operator's certification class must be equal to or higher than the class of the system they oversee — an operator certified at Class S-B, for example, may oversee an S-B, S-C, or S-D system, but not an S-A system.
