Certification Structure
Montana DEQ's Public Water Supply Bureau certifies distribution operators in four classes, from Class 4A (lowest, smallest/simplest systems) up to Class 1A (highest, largest and most complex distribution networks). The "A" designator distinguishes the distribution track from the "B" (water treatment) and "C" (wastewater treatment) tracks administered by the same DEQ program. Certificates run on a 36-month renewal cycle, and operators advance by gaining qualifying experience and passing the next class's exam — classes cannot be skipped.
