New Hampshire Water Treatment Operator Certification
NH DES's Drinking Water & Groundwater Bureau certifies Water Treatment operators across five grades — Grade 1A (entry level) through Grade IV (highest) — on a 2-year renewal cycle. Continuing education requirements scale with grade: Grade 1A operators need at least 5 contact hours per 2-year cycle, while higher grades require at least 20.
Granite Bedrock and Small-System Fragmentation
New Hampshire's drinking water systems draw heavily on fractured granite bedrock aquifers, which yield relatively modest but generally good-quality groundwater — a contrast to the large surface-water systems common elsewhere in New England. The state has an unusually high number of small, independently-owned water systems, many serving fewer than 500 people. This creates real operator-capacity challenges, since small systems often str
