Water Distribution: Alabama Grade I Operator Guide
Alabama Water Distribution is a single Grade I license (ADEM Admin. Code 335-10-1-.03) covering every distribution system in the state, from a small rural line to a major city's network — there is no Grade II/III/IV distribution tier as in some states. A Grade I distribution operator is responsible for everything downstream of the treatment plant: getting water to the customer safely, at adequate pressure, and with disinfectant residual intact.
Pipe materials and maintenance
Alabama systems use a mix of ductile iron, PVC, and older cast iron/asbestos-cement main in legacy systems. Operators must recognize tuberculation and internal corrosion in older iron main (which reduces carrying capacity and can release iron into the water, causing customer complaints), proper trench bedding/backfill for new installation, and safe main-break
